- meet in Siracusa (or wherever you are based) and drive to Francavilla di Sicilia
- stop for a snack and granita before our walk up the castle
- (optional: quite steep!) walk up a steep, breathtaking trail leading to the top of the castle ruins and enjoy a 360° view embracing Mount Etna, the coast, the neighbouring hilltop town of Castiglione, the Alcantara Valley, the Nebrodi range etc.
- walk along an easier, but very interesting loop trail at the foot of the castle, partly along the Alcantara river with its incredible geometric rock formations and learn about its origins and its special features
- have lunch in a local trattoria or a picnic by the river (to be agreed in advance)
- visit the Gole dell’Alcantara, where the steep black rocks create a canyon-like landscape
You may either want to drive back to Siracusa (etc.), or stop in Francavilla or Castiglione for coffee, granita, or visit a local winery (additional fee), as the area of Castiglione and Passopisciaro have become world-renowned for their excellent production.
